The knowledge tests are written assessment for which you will need a good knowledge of the Runnymede borough and / or the requirements and conditions which apply to the type of licence you want. Tests are held once a month at the Civic Centre. Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time as no extra time will be given if you're late. On the day of the test, you are required to bring your DVLA driving licence or passport with you.
Structure of the tests
There are three parts. You have one hour to complete parts 1 and 2 and a further half hour to complete the hackney carriage route test, if applicable.
Part 1 (all applicants):
You will be asked questions on seatbelt and mobile phone use, bylaws, requirements, conditions and fares, which are supplied in your taxi pack (multiple choice). The pass mark is 20 out of 25.
There will also be a separate numeracy test. The pass mark for this is five out of five.
Please note that if you are going to apply for a private hire operators licence you will only be tested on your knowledge of the private hire operator requirements and conditions.
Part 2 (all applicants):
You will be tested on your knowledge of 60 locations in Runnymede and expected to be able to name the exact roads and towns.
We have introduced a standard set of locations which all applicants should use as a study aid to assist them in gaining knowledge of the area. This lists a number locations in Runnymede. Sixty of these locations make up the test paper and the questions are changed for each test to prevent duplicate test papers being produced, the pass mark is 45/60. Knowledge of all these locations is essential if you want to pass.
Part 3 (hackney carriage applicants only):
You will need to write down three routes from each of the hackney carriage ranks at Egham, Chertsey and Addlestone to a named location in the borough. You'll need to include all road names, direction of turns at junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights. The pass mark is six out of nine.
We will inform you of your results in writing within seven working days.
For all sections, if the examiner cannot read any answer, it will not receive a mark.
Should you not pass the test you can sit it again as often as necessary, the fee will apply for each re sit.
