Two brand new swimming pools, a sports hall, gym and health spa are just some of the features of Runnymede's newest leisure centre, the Egham Orbit, which has officially launched this week.
The £19m centre, in Vicarage Lane, Egham, was officially opened by the Queen's cousin, the Duke of Kent, giving the royal seal of approval to the venue. The construction has been paid for by Runnymede Borough Council and will be run by the Achieve Lifestyle trust on the Council's behalf.
Speaking at the launch, the Duke said: "I have never seen such a centre, it is very grand. It is a wonderful place and I am sure it is going to be a success."
In 2016, residents old and young told the Council that swimming was among their top five priorities for visiting towns in the borough. Councillors listened and three years on, the opening of Egham Orbit will allow lane swimming, individual swimming and group sessions for all ages.
As well as the main disabled-access eight lane 25 x 17m main pool, a 10m x 10m learner pool with splash area has been included in the brand new development.
Badminton, table tennis, tennis and netball are among the sports catered for at the centre, while the 110-station gym provides the latest equipment, and classes are also available.
Otium Spa provide facilities to energise, relax, including a hydro pool, sauna and steam room, with treatments for men and women available.
Family options are available, including a café, children's swimming lessons, gymnastics, trampolining and soft play.
Paul Turrell, Chief Executive of Runnymede Borough Council said: "When the Council decided to build a state-of-the-art leisure centre in the north of the borough, we knew it had to cater for the whole community to really succeed, so I'm happy to see the range of activities available.
"This is a major investment and a sign of the Council's commitment to listening and supporting local people. Our hope is that everyone living and working in the area will make use of the Orbit and see the health benefits in their day-to-day lives.
Mr Turrell continued: "It is very pleasing that at last Runnymede has a full-size and fully accessible public swimming pool to benefit people of all ages, alongside all of the other excellent facilities housed at the Orbit."
The launch marks the successful completion of the first phase of the Council's £200m Runnymede Regeneration Programme. This began with Addlestone ONE and will see several sites redeveloped across the borough over the next eight to 13 years.
