The Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA) is a series of internationally protected heathland habitats which are home to a number of protected species including ground nesting bird species.

In order to protect the heathland habitat and bird species, Runnymede along with other local authorities in Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey as well as Natural England have agreed a set of avoidance and mitigation measures which allows residential development to continue to come forward by providing alternative areas for recreation and an access and management project.

Runnymede Borough Council adopted a Thames Basin Heaths SPA Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on the 14 April 2021, which sets out the Council's approach to the measures required to avoid/mitigate impacts to the SPA and which replaces the existing Thames Basin Heaths SPG adopted in 2009. The SPD came into force on the 15 April 2021.

The adopted SPD and accompanying documents can be viewed on this page on the Council's website.
