Household Collections

Clinical

Residents treating themselves at home can request free fortnightly collections for clinical waste, and sharps collections that are booked when needed. Your doctor or nurse will advise if separate collection is needed and provide orange or yellow sacks and/or a sharps box.

Clinical waste includes sharps and items that are infectious or hazardous, such as:

  • Swabs, wound dressings, bandages contaminated with hazardous substances
  • Wound vacuum drains or pumps
  • Sharps (e.g. Used or unused syringes, needles, and lancets)

How the service works

A dedicated vehicle collects sacks containing medical waste and sharps boxes every fortnight. Collections are on a Wednesday of refuse collection week. Although the same vehicle collects sacks and sharps boxes, they must be presented separately for collection.

To use this service, clinical waste and sharps must be correctly contained.

Clinical waste sack collections

Waste must be contained within the yellow or orange sacks provided by your nurse or other healthcare provider. Please be aware that the council does not provide clinical waste sacks.

If you request a clinical waste collection, this is what will happen.

  • We will deliver a yellow wheelie bin. This is for you to store your clinical waste sacks.
  • You place your tied, clinical waste sacks in the bin
  • You present your bin by 5am on collection day
  • We collect the contents every fortnight until you contact us to cancel the service.

You must not put sharps boxes or loose waste in the yellow bin

  • Loose waste within the bin will not be collected
  • Sacks that are not securely tied will not be collected
  • Waste presented in black sacks will not be collected.

Request a clinical collection.

Sharps

Your nurse or healthcare professional will supply you with a sharps box.  This is a single use container. Please make sure you have a replacement box from your doctors or the hospital before booking your collection. Please be aware the council does not supply sharps boxes.

If you request a sharps collection, this is for a single collection only. This is what need to do.

  • Contain your sharps within the sharps box
  • shut lid securely
  • Present your box in visible or agreed location by 5am on collection day

Please request a sharps collection as needed.
