Presiding Officer and Poll Clerks
Polling staff are employed to carry out duties at polling stations. They are responsible for making sure that the proper procedures for voting are followed in polling stations.
On Election Day, polling staff are required to work from 6:30am until 10.00pm without leaving the polling station. Staff are also required to undertake training prior to the day which will be provided online.
Counting staff
We employ counting staff to assist in counting the votes. This usually takes place either after the polling stations have closed, on the night of election, and continues into the early hours of the following morning or they are held the day after the election. This role requires high levels of concentration and accuracy.
Eligibility
- You must be at least 18 years of age to work in a polling station or as a counting assistant
- If you are not employed by the council you will need to provide your passport or relevant supporting information which confirms you are entitled to work in the UK
- When applying to undertake any of the duties above, political restrictions will apply. This will include working, promoting and undertaking any campaigning for any political party or candidate. You will find more information on this when completing the application form and/or training
Rate of pay
The rates of pay for election staff vary depending on the job role and the type of election. The fees are agreed Surrey wide and vary from year to year. Contact the elections office for further information.
