Housing fraud

Our approach to tackling housing fraud

We are committed to protecting public funds from fraud. Our dedicated fraud team uses a variety of methods to detect and investigate fraud, such as checking a tenant’s housing record against other records such as Housing Benefit and Electoral Roll.

We also work with other government agencies and law enforcement to share information and collaborate on investigations. We are committed to bringing fraudsters to justice and protecting public funds.

Tenancy audits

Runnymede Borough Council conducts tenancy audits to ensure that Council housing is being used appropriately and that tenants are meeting their obligations under their tenancy agreements. The audits are unannounced and can take place at any time.

During a tenancy audit, a Council officer will visit the property and

  • Check that the property is being occupied by the tenant named on the tenancy agreement
  • Check that the property is being used for residential purposes only
  • Check that the property is being kept in good condition
  • Check that the tenant is paying their rent on time
  • Check that the tenant is not subletting the property without permission

If the council officer finds any problems during the tenancy audit, they may take action, such as

  • Serving a notice to the tenant to remedy the problem
  • Taking legal action against the tenant
  • Repossessing the property

Tenancy audits are an important way for Runnymede Borough Council to protect its assets and ensure that council housing is being used for its intended purpose. They also help to deter fraud and ensure that tenants are meeting their obligations.

Tenancy Audits

Over the next year, all homes will be visited by a member of the Tenancy Audit and Enforcement team as part of the Council's tenancy audit.
