General election information

Polling station sign 2024

The General Election takes place on Thursday this week, with polling stations open from 7am-10pm.

► The result of the election will be published on this page once it is declared. The Council expects this to happen by about 4am on the morning of Friday 5 July.

Changes made by the Electoral Commission mean that this year the borough area has been split across two parliamentary constituencies.

Most of the borough is covered by the existing Runnymede and Weybridge constituency, while Englefield Green and Virginia Water in the north of Runnymede are now covered by the Windsor constituency.

The Runnymede and Weybridge constituency election is being administered by Runnymede Borough Council, while the Windsor constituency election is being administered by Windsor and Maidenhead Council.

The election will decide who is to be the MP for each constituency, representing people living in them at Westminster.

If you are eligible to vote you should have received a polling card setting out where your polling station is. Depending on where you live you will have received this from either Runnymede Borough Council or Windsor and Maidenhead Council. The polling station is the place where you should go to cast your vote in person. You do not have to take your polling card to the polling station.

Voting by post

If you are voting by post, you may also return your postal vote to the polling station in person, if for example you have concerns about whether Royal Mail will deliver it in time.

You may also return your postal vote to the Council offices in Addlestone during opening hours which are 8.30am-5pm. Please do not put postal votes in the letter box, the library book returns box or under the door. You must give it to our reception staff in person and sign for it.

Postal votes received after 10pm on Thursday cannot be accepted, even if you posted them in advance they arrive with the Council by post the next day.

Runnymede Borough Council cannot accept postal votes for the Windsor constituency.

Not received your postal vote?

If you have not yet received your postal vote pack, the Council can re-issue it to you. You must contact us urgently:

You will need to collect the postal vote from the Civic Centre in Addlestone and either complete it straightaway or get it back to us at the Civic Centre by 5pm on Thursday, or deliver it to your polling station by 10pm on Thursday.

If you come under the new Windsor Constituency (Englefield Green East and West and Virginia Water) you will need to contact the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead as they issued your postal vote.

Proxy and emergency proxy voting

If you are voting by proxy (asking someone else to vote on your behalf) you must have arranged this formally with the Council by now. You cannot just ask a friend or family member to go and vote for you without telling the Council.

It is now too late to register to vote, apply for a postal vote or register for a proxy vote, but if you need an emergency proxy vote, you may be able to apply for one. Find out more: https://www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/voting-by-proxy

Polling station ID

You will need to take a form of identification to the polling station if you are voting in person. Find out the official list of what is accepted: https://www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/photo-id-youll-need

If you do not have an acceptable form of ID, it is now too late to apply for a voter authority certificate.

Vote counting and result

Counting of the votes which people have cast will take place overnight on Thursday / Friday. The count is a fast moving and busy environment and is not open to the public. Candidates, their election agents and the media are allowed to attend the count so you may see updates on social media during the night. The Council will publish the official result on its website and on social media once it has been formally declared.

New MPs

The elected MPs for both constituencies will not be employed by or connected to Runnymede Borough Council and the Council cannot answer questions about their work or tell them to contact you. You will be able to find their contact details via the House of Commons website www.parliament.uk or by calling 020 7219 4272.
