Runnymede Borough Council is sad to report that Cllr Jonathan Wilson, a serving elected member of the Council, died at the weekend.
Cllr Wilson was a member of Runnymede Borough Council from 2008-18 where he represented the Egham Hythe Ward. Although he lost his seat in 2018, he returned to the Council in 2019 representing Addlestone South which he did until his death. He was a member of the Conservative Party.
During the current municipal year he served on the Licensing Committee and sub-committee, Planning Committee and Regulatory Committee, as well as Full Council, all of which he supported diligently.
In a statement, the four Co-Leaders of the Council said: “We are saddened to hear about the unexpected death of our colleague Jonathan Wilson, and our thoughts are with his parents and family members. He has been a stalwart member of the Council for many years, not seeking the limelight, but giving his views in meetings carefully and sincerely.
“He was Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee in 2017/18 and was Chair of the Licensing and Regulatory Committees from 2021 – 2024, where he gave valuable service to the community. Like all councillors, his prime concern was that the Council helped improve the lives of local people and maintained the borough as a successful and attractive place to live and do business.
“Jonathan performed his duties with a quiet dignity and with respect towards his fellow councillors and Council staff. He will be sorely missed.”
Cllr Peter Snow, Leader of the opposition Conservative Group on Runnymede Borough Council, said: “Jonathan was the calming influence in the turbulent times of our Council, often being the voice of reason. He was passionate about his residents and dedicated to the committees he served on. His interest and knowledge was wide and well versed, from licensing to planning.
“During the 2014 floods Jonathan played an integral part in unifying the residents’ efforts in the formation of the Egham Hythe flood relief centre, dedicating many hours for the centre to remain a positive function for residents who basically lost everything.
“Jonathan was kind, generous, and always supportive. He was an excellent councillor, a great friend and possessed an infectious dry wit sense of humour. It's his dedication and kindness we shall all remember him for.”
A minute’s silence in memory of Cllr Wilson will be held at the start of the next Full Council meeting on 24 October.
