Recycling Week: Join the challenge to rescue your waste!

It’s Recycling Week, and this October we’re encouraging residents to rescue as many items from the rubbish bin as you can.

By recycling, we can all make a difference to reduce waste and protect the environment.

Did you know that dry, mixed recycling items are sent to a sorting plant to be separated and reprocessed into new products? For example:

  • Perfume bottles can be recycled into champagne bottles.
  • Deodorant cans can be turned into train parts.
  • Trigger spray bottles can become raincoats.
  • Yogurt pots can be made into children’s toys.
  • Toilet roll tubes can be reprocessed into egg boxes.

In addition to everyday recyclables, you can also recycle much bulkier items such as textiles and small electricals.

Items like underwear, clothes, bags, belts, and pairs of shoes are all acceptable. Please make sure these items are in good condition. However, we can’t recycle duvets, pillows, single shoes, or cuddly toys. Please make sure items are in clean and dry before setting them aside for collection.

If you have a broken or old small electrical item, we offer a collection service for these too. Anything with a plug, battery-operated items, chargers, and cables can be collected. Leave no more than one small, tied carrier bag next to your bin - no black bags, please! Batteries should go in a small clear bag of their own.

You can also recycle all types of food, from meat to eggshells, and even teabags. Just be sure to keep liquids like oil, fats, and milk out. For convenience, line your food waste caddy with plastic carrier bags or liners for easy clean up. Once recycled, food waste creates bio-fertiliser and biogas, used to generate electricity, heat and transport fuel. Did you know our vehicle fleet runs on hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is produced from waste food products?
