Residents in Runnymede will soon be set to call Corn Merchant House home after the keys were officially handed over to social housing provider Accent Housing by the Council.

The new building consists of 26 affordable homes, and forms part of the wider £90m Magna Square development in Egham.

The Council will nominate residents of the Borough of Runnymede who are on its social housing waiting list, or people who have worked in the area for a period of time, to live in these new purpose-built apartments. The dedicated affordable housing is one of four new buildings at the high-profile town centre site.

There will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments within the building. Within the development there are also three apartments designed specifically for disabled residents, with adjustable worktops that move-up and down and several other features which allow these new homes to be fully wheelchair accessible.

Alex Williams, Corporate Head of Assets and Regeneration at Runnymede Borough Council, said:

We are delighted to have officially handed the keys over to Accent Housing which is ready to welcome our nominated residents to their new homes in the heart of Egham.

We are also pleased to have created dedicated affordable housing, enabling the widest range of people to enjoy the benefits of town centre living. By bringing together people from all walks of life, including our student population, Egham will be an ever-more vibrant and exciting place to live.

Sarah Ireland, Executive Director of Development Sales & Home Ownership, Accent Group, said:

We have been delighted to work in partnership with Runnymede on this scheme and look forward to managing Corn Merchant House and welcoming its new residents in the coming weeks and months.

We strive to deliver homes that people can be proud of, and which meet the very best in living standards. These newly built apartments have been built to a really high standard and specification and tick all the boxes when it comes to creating homes people can enjoy for life.

Cllr Nick Prescot, Leader of Runnymede Borough Council said:

It's exciting to watch the wider Magna Square development coming together, ready for completion in early 2022. This is a major milestone for the Council and will help to re-invigorate the centre of Egham, transforming it into a destination location, that is so much more than a popular commuter town.

Situated on the junction of Station Road North and High Street, the wider development is set to complete in early 2022. Once open it will:

  • offer a new town square
  • provide 34 affordable flats
  • create 67 apartments for private sale or rent
  • bring a new supermarket to the town centre
  • be a home to Egham’s first cinema for many years, as well as allowing for other leisure uses

Magna Square also supports the Council’s wider Climate Change Strategy, and the development includes several eco-friendly features, including highly efficient thermal insulation, low energy lighting and solar-controlled glazing, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.
