Runnymede Borough Council has reached another major milestone at its £90m Magna Square development, as Budgens welcomed shoppers to its brand-new Egham store today, Friday 11 February 2022.
The shop is situated on the corner of Station Road North and High Street. The new store will provide residents with more choice when shopping locally, enabling them to purchase fresh produce quickly and easily. Budgens will open 24-hours a day, seven days a week and has created 14 new jobs in the local area.
The retailer returns to a spacious and modern retail unit, taking on more space in the process. The old store was approximately 2,500 sq ft whilst the new shop stands at 3,400 sq ft, providing more space for fresh produce and every-day items.
The wider Magna Square development forms a key part of landowner Runnymede Borough Council’s ambitious regeneration plans for the Borough. Work is moving at pace behind the scenes as internal fit out and design continues for new restaurants, retailers, and show homes.
The development is set to complete later this year with several new businesses due to open.
Once complete the wider development is set to feature
- a new town square
- 34 affordable flats
- 67 apartments for private sale or rent
- Egham’s first cinema for many years
as well as other businesses.
Aruran Muthu, Owner at Budgens Egham, said:
I am delighted to open our brand-new Budgens store in such a prominent high street position, welcoming both old and new customers. Our shop has strong links with the local community having previously operated on Egham High Street for 10 years.
Cllr Nick Prescot, Leader of Runnymede Borough Council, said:
I am pleased to welcome Budgens back to the centre of Egham and as our first retailer at Magna Square. Budgens is the first of many big announcements due in 2022, with lots of excitement expected as people start to see more businesses opening throughout the year.
As a Council we’ve always been confident in the centre of Egham and what we can achieve to support local people, improve the economy and enhance our environment. We’ve been really pleased with the level of interest in the development, from both national and independent retailers. Our aim is to make Egham stand out, creating vibrancy in the area and increasing footfall in the process.
The wider development also supports the Council’s commitment to the climate, with several eco-friendly credentials including, solar-controlled glazing, low energy lighting and highly efficient thermal insulation.
