Exciting new daytime social scene set to launch in Addlestone

A raft of new entertainment and services for older people is soon to be unveiled at the Addlestone Centre (formerly the Addlestone Community Centre), following a vote by Runnymede’s Councillors.

The Council is launching a new partnership with the popular community centre to provide a five day a week service for older people living locally.

Games, speakers, activities, events and opportunities to socialise with friends will all be available. The centre’s café will also be open throughout the day, and they will offer a choice of meal types.

The centre offers great flexibility and will be catering to anyone. Walk-ins will be very welcome and there is no need to book. Visitors will be asked to pay a small fee on days they visit to support the cost of running activities.

Cllr Chris Howorth, Chairman of the Community Service Committee said:

We’re delighted to offer a brand-new range of daytime entertainment for older people in Addlestone and the surrounding area while at the same time being able to support an important community partner – the Addlestone Centre.

We know that what most active older people are looking for is an enjoyable place to meet friends, keep themselves occupied and expand their horizons. Working with the Addlestone Centre’s team provides the perfect opportunity.”

The Addlestone Centre has been a hub of community entertainment and social life for several years. The partnership with the Council will allow it to extend its daytime activities further.

The Council will support the new partnership with a £26,000 grant to the Addlestone Centre over two years, plus an extra grant of £5,000 to cover initial set up costs. On top of that the Council will invest £29,000 to employ staff, support activities costs and venue hire.

The new partnership with the Addlestone Centre is a great example of the Council’s forthcoming Empowering Communities Strategy in action. The strategy sets out how the Council will empower and enable successful and well-run community ventures to expand and benefit more residents.

Cllr Howorth added:

This new offer to residents will be significantly more flexible and cater to a wider range of needs and interests. We’re lucky to have the Addlestone Centre in our community and are pleased they are working with us to provide such a valuable service.

Ian Lee, Chairman of the Addlestone Centre said:

We are delighted and honoured to offer these additional facilities to the older residents of Addlestone. With our expansion plans - which are supported by Runnymede Borough Council and the Our Fund Surrey charity - we will have enough room to welcome many more users.

The support from the Borough Council has always been given and this additional resource will greatly enhance our ability to serve the real needs of our community.”

New community focused uses will now be found for the Eileen Tozer Centre location while staff concentrate on building a partnership with the Addlestone Centre team.
