Air Pollution Alert Service

This is a free text, call or email alert service for residents with respiratory problems to warn of increases in pollution levels capable of affecting health.

Air pollution levels within Runnymede are generally low, however very occasionally for around 20 days pollution levels are reached that may cause short term health problems for people with pre-existing respiratory problems such as:

  • severe asthma
  • chronic bronchitis
  • emphysema
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

These elevated pollution levels are normally seen in the summer months with the main pollutant of concern being ground level ozone, and occasionally particulate pollution known as PM10.

In order to alert residents with respiratory problems of when these increased levels of pollution are likely to occur, the council operates a pollution warning service (airTEXT).

The service is free, and users can subscribe and unsubscribe at any time. Messages informs users 24 hours in advance of elevated pollution events, either by a recorded telephone message, text to a mobile phone, or via email, to help users manage their condition more effectively by making choices such as limiting physical excursion.

For further health information see the airTEXT health advice page (airTEXT website).

A survey of service users showed that 88% of survey respondents found it a useful or very useful service, and two thirds had recommended it to someone else. They found the service helped them manage their symptoms and reduce their exposure to air pollution. They also reported increased confidence to participate in social and recreational activities.
