The Council approved a new Garage Strategy on 16 November 2022.
The reason for the strategy is that the Council needs to make the best use of its garage stock.
Many garages are empty and need costly repairs. A large proportion is not being used for their intended purpose of parking cars. Some of those using the garages don’t live in the Borough, some residing as far away as Yeovil.
With the rent the Council receives from renting garages falling by £20,000 compared to 2020, we are reviewing how to make the best use of the Council’s garage stock.
The Council’s draft Garage Strategy aims to:
- Assess the condition of the garages, looking first at sites where many of the garages are empty
- Maintain revenue from the garages
- Consider alternative uses like parking areas, storage facilities and housing
