The A320 highway improvement scheme
Further investigations demonstrated that with the implementation of a proposed mitigation scheme along the A320 in the vicinity of Chertsey and Ottershaw, the growth proposed in the Runnymede 2030 Local Plan could be satisfactorily accommodated within the road network.
A scheme was hence developed, focussing, from a detailed traffic model, on a number of key junctions and links, and a funding bid for the scheme (known as the A320 North of Woking HIF scheme) was submitted to the national Housing Infrastructure Fund in April 2019. Notification was received in early 2020 that £41.8 million of funding had been awarded to allow the highways improvements to be delivered.
Since the notification of award, the scheme has continued to be developed and refined, particularly in terms of design, planning, and delivery costings. Public consultation has occurred during this period of refinement, and other processes have also been undertaken, for example securing the necessary additional land along the corridor to implement the scheme, carrying out the necessary surveys, and securing the relevant consents.
The final scheme design, which is due to be delivered shortly through construction, comprises various road, pavement, public transport and cycle facility improvements to junctions and the link roads along the A320 between Ottershaw and Chertsey, including:
- Improvements to traffic lane facilities and full signalisation of St Peters Roundabout
- Provision of an additional, third traffic lane eastbound on St Peters Way East
- Provision of a new and improved Ottershaw roundabout with greater circulatory capacity with widened approaches and exits providing additional traffic lanes
- Improvements to the M25 junction 11 interchange, including full circulatory signalisation and widened northbound and southbound exit slip roads with new dedicated left turn lanes
- Provision of a new roundabout at the Holloway Hill/ Green Lane junction, with flood reduction initiatives, including the construction of attenuation ponds and shallow swales
- Provision of shared use footway/cycleways where possible
- Improvements to Guildford Road, near Salesian School, include installation of a dedicated drop-off layby / bus bays on the east side of Guildford Road along the front of the school
- Improved lighting for all road users and provision of safe crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the whole scheme
