What is work experience?
Work experience in a council can be a great way to gain valuable skills and experience, and to learn more about how local government works. Councils offer a wide range of work experience placements, so you can find one that matches your interests and skills.
Here are some of the benefits of doing work experience in a council
- Gain valuable skills and experience. Your placement with the council will help you to develop transferable skills, such as communication, time management, teamwork, and problem-solving.
- Explore different career options. Work experience can help you to decide what areas interest you and support you in deciding future career choices.
- Improve your employability. You will have the opportunity to have a mock interview and receive constructive feedback to help you with future employment
Our work experience placements are unpaid and can accommodate a placement of up to 2 weeks for students.
The council are also able to offer unpaid work experience placements to Runnymede Borough residents and can be flexible on the length of the placement. For example, we could arrange one day per week for five weeks. Please indicate your requirements on your application form and the council will do our best to accommodate.
On your placement you will
- work on real work projects with a mentor to supervise you
- learn about different job roles
- gain a deeper insight into what Runnymede Borough Council do
- keep a diary of your work experience
You may also shadow members of the team and assist them with their day to day work, or you could accompany a member of the team to a meeting or an event.
