In your community

Shop Local

Shopping locally supports your community and local economy while reducing the impact of shopping on the environment. Purchasing local means products don't have to travel as far. Food products are often transported via air, sea, or land on journeys that can use large amounts of fossil fuels.

Focussing on the local means you can get there easily and have the benefit of finding more unique items from independent retailers. While you’re reducing your environmental impact from shopping locally, why not also consider visiting a local zero waste shop or reducing your intake of meat and dairy products? All our actions add up and make a huge difference!

Volunteer for an environmental initiative

There are lots of groups in Runnymede borough that are focussed on the environment and promoting sustainable principles. A few are listed below, and if you are part of a group and would like to be added to this list, email climatechange@runnymede.gov.uk

Great Big Green Week

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. Local groups across the UK will be organising events around the themes of climate change action, sustainability, and nature preservation.

The Council has been involved in the event for the last two years, and we are hoping to make 2024 bigger than ever! With an exciting programme of activities planned stay up to date with the latest updates on the Council’s dedicated pages.

Support your community by getting involved in one or many of the planned events over the course of the week, or even organise your own event aligned to the 2024 theme of ‘Let’s swap together for good’.
