Volunteer at Hare Hill open space
The Hare Hill volunteers are a small, friendly group who meet every Sunday on Hare Hill Open Space between 10:30 and 13:30. The group are led by Senior Warden, Dr Kathy Miller, who has been an honorary warden for 29 years. Liaising with the Open Space team, the group work through tasks set out in the Management Plan for the site created by Surrey Wildlife Trust. This includes tasks such as removing any invasive shrubs and saplings (such as sycamore, cherry laurel and snowberry), building dead hedges and creating hibernacula and habitat piles for the benefit of wildlife, removing bulrushes from the pond area, clearing areas of bramble and recreating woodland glades as well as logging any new species that are spotted while working. Reactive tasks such as keeping footpaths clear & laying bark chip paths are also undertaken when possible.
There is no weekly commitment, just come along when you can as the extra hands are always so very much appreciated. Tea/coffee and a chocolatey snack are always provided at noon.
To get involved, please message Kathy on 07860 122698 or e-mail drkathymiller@aol.com if you’re interested in joining. The volunteer team would be delighted to meet you. It is really possible to make a difference to this wonderfully biodiverse site and improve things for both nature and people!
