On the move

Active Travel

The most sustainable choice for any journey you take is either walking or cycling wherever and whenever possible. These forms of active travel can save money, improve your mental and physical health, be quicker than you might think, and are the most environmentally friendly way of getting around.

Runnymede is one of the first boroughs to take forward a wide cycling and walking plan which will radically change the way residents can move across the area without getting in cars. Find out more about our plans to improve local walking and cycling infrastructure on Surrey County Council website.

Walking or wheeling just one mile to the local shops and back once a week, rather than driving, could save around £25 per year. Why not try Living Streets 20 tips for walking or join one of our wellbeing walks in Runnymede.

Over longer distances, you may prefer to cycle, which may be quicker at busier times and helps to build physical fitness. Cycling is permitted on most roads (highways), byways and bridleways, as well as dedicated cycle tracks. There are a range of resources out there to find the right route for you and cycle safely:

Surrey County Council has a cycling facilities map to show where improvements have been made

The national cycle network is a UK-wide network of signed paths and routes for walking, wheeling, cycling and exploring outdoors

Cycling UK provides a lot of advice and tips for cyclists

If you need some assistance with cycling, you could consider an e-bike which have an electric motor and battery to help you travel longer distances. Find out more about e-bikes from the Energy Saving Trust.
